Can you tell a story in five seconds?

I don’t think I can tell my story in five seconds, but, Robert Clear can. I recently discovered Robert’s stories and pictures. I wanted to show it on Cool Stuff. I think what Robert is doing is amazing and some of his stories are funny.  Sometimes, to tell a story, one only needs a few words. I asked Robert how does he do it, and why?

MIddle Class Aspiration by Robert Clear

“My name’s Robert Clear and I’m an artist and writer from London. In my work I combine words and images to tell stories, but I impose a special constraint on myself: I aim to tell each story in no more than five seconds. That’s one twelfth of a minute to conjure in the viewer’s mind a world, its characters and a sense of what’s at stake for them. That means a tight economy of words and line and form, a careful balancing of text and image and a sense of rhythm that uses words and pictures as semantic cues and as pure pattern.

Hyena by Robert Clear

Why five seconds? We live in an age where the rest of the world is always at hand, available through the glass screens that connect us to the internet. We have the means to obtain instant gratification, to be entertained always. In this age an artist or writer can expect no more than five seconds of a stranger’s time. Advertisers know this. They craft hooks to sell products that use those precious seconds to leave the viewer wanting more. I decided to use that fragment of time to construe the entire experience; to create something that can be viewed, inwardly digested and (hopefully) enjoyed in five ticks of a clock.

The inspiration for much of my work is London. Perhaps surprisingly, given that it’s a sprawling mass of eight and a half million people, it’s the city’s animals that frequently become my subjects. ‘London Beasts’ is one of my recent series, and animals are the main characters. Each has a particular association with London, whether it be an area, a park or a specific building, and for each I created a story that evoked this connection.

One of the most interesting things about taking my work online has been the chance to interact with others who are interested in art and storytelling. If anyone wants to get in touch, I’d love to hear from you”.

Paint Palate of Natural Wonder

Music: “Silence” by Kitaro

The Zhangye Danxia is located in the Gansu Province of China. I found these mountains absolutely stunning! Red sandstone and various other mineral deposits ‘paint’ these spectacular series of coloured landscapes, depending on light, and which angle you look from.  Watching the video is like watching a series of landscape paintings. Tourist board walks and trails have been built over the land formation, making it easier for visitors to see it up close. The colours of these surreal mountains have been referred to as the Paint Palate of God.

The mountains and surrounding areas covered with red sandstone and conglomerate has intrigued geologists for many years. Six of the Danxia landform sites have been inscribed as part of the World Heritage sites.

Cool Stuff – Klassen Makes Wood Sing

12-artsy-tables-wow-factor-7-living-edge

I love wood when it is combined with steel and glass. I have posted other beautiful furniture here on Cool Stuff.  Here is another work of art from Washington-based artist and furniture maker Greg Klassen.

“I try to marry the natural beauty of the wood with the skilled craftsmanship of the maker. When the two come together, a piece can really sing!” Klassen said.

Klassen’s beautiful lake-like features of desks and tables straddle the line between furniture and art. He seeks out wood with defects and unique features from his local sawmill which he exploits to his advantage by turning them into the focus of each piece he makes. He does it so cleverly that the defects become the art.

Klassen 2

Due to his relationship with a local sawmill, Klassen has access to pieces of raw wood, which means that he can make use of its natural forms and beautiful imperfections for his creative furniture. These organic forms lend natural power to the rivers and lakes on his tables, which are completed with custom-cut panes of glass and look much like features on a topographical map.

The Giant Birdsnest

Unknown-1

A few days ago, I posted a story about our chickens and their laying habits.  My son found this interesting couch or bed, and it seemed an appropriate piece to post for my Cool Stuff for the week. Cool Stuff is a piece of furniture or design or even artwork that I feel is very interesting and I share it with the readers of this blog. This ‘nest’ is really a playful piece of furniture created Merav (Salush) Eitan and Gaston Zahr,  OGE CreativeGroup. You have to jump into it to enjoy it.

The Giant Birdsnest aka “Giant Birdsnest for creating new ideas” was conceived and created as a prototype for new and inspiring socializing space: a fusion of furniture and playground: A comfortable informal and sensual soft space.

The wooden nest is filled with highly comfortable egg-shaped sitting poofs which allow ergonomic sitting positions and various configurations for informal meetings and social exchange.

Unknown

The nest comes in various sizes, from a small and intimate nest for one, to 2-3 people up to a 4.50 m diameter big version which can host up to 16 people at once – the soft space is perfect, comfortable and inspiring place for resting, browsing the web, reading, relaxing, loving, talking, briefing, discussing (…)

Its powerful, yet simple concept and intriguing character needs no explanation or user manual: Ready to be used, ready for playing or working in.

Simply jump in and enjoy.

Cool Stuff – Female torsos made from re-cycled materials

This collection of Columbian artist Federico Uribe’s work may be classified more as a “hot stuff” as well as a cool one. Federico is one of my favourite artists in the world. He is known for his great paintings and other art forms but I chose this collection for “Cool Stuff”. How exquisite is this collection, giving life back into discarded day to day materials?

Federico Uribe

Crafting human form in recycled objects defines Federico’s salvaging act of rediscovering use in things abandoned. Uribe randomly selects material raging from keyboards, coins, locks, dominoes, padlocks, paperclips, plastic fruits etc to transform them into beautifully shaped female torsos with enticing sensual presence.

 Art in recycling

The magical pieces of art imbued with great aesthetics assert usefulness in objects discarded. His creative assemblage affirms recycling to save our environment by realizing useful permanence in what had had been sidestepped as throw away.

Cool Stuff: Wood Casting with Hilla Shamia

16

For someone who is interested in art and beauty in everyday things, it came as no surprise that my sons have developed the same ‘eye’. My son Nathan introduced me to Hilla Shamia, an Israeli furniture designer who combines wood and metal in a way you don’t see too often.

Hilla Shamia is a Israel-based designer with B.Des. at Holon Institute of Technology, Industrial Design department.
Hilla developed a unique technique that joins the materials of aluminum and wood. She created a series of furnitures based on this technique called – Wood Casting.

These ‘wood castings’ are made from a whole tree trunk, and that enables them to preserve the natural form of the wood while still maintaining distinct boundaries in its creation. Each is a One-of-a-Kind piece.
