Cool Stuff – Klassen Makes Wood Sing

12-artsy-tables-wow-factor-7-living-edge

I love wood when it is combined with steel and glass. I have posted other beautiful furniture here on Cool Stuff.  Here is another work of art from Washington-based artist and furniture maker Greg Klassen.

“I try to marry the natural beauty of the wood with the skilled craftsmanship of the maker. When the two come together, a piece can really sing!” Klassen said.

Klassen’s beautiful lake-like features of desks and tables straddle the line between furniture and art. He seeks out wood with defects and unique features from his local sawmill which he exploits to his advantage by turning them into the focus of each piece he makes. He does it so cleverly that the defects become the art.

Due to his relationship with a local sawmill, Klassen has access to pieces of raw wood, which means that he can make use of its natural forms and beautiful imperfections for his creative furniture. These organic forms lend natural power to the rivers and lakes on his tables, which are completed with custom-cut panes of glass and look much like features on a topographical map.

Cool Stuff: Wood Casting with Hilla Shamia

16

For someone who is interested in art and beauty in everyday things, it came as no surprise that my sons have developed the same ‘eye’. My son Nathan introduced me to Hilla Shamia, an Israeli furniture designer who combines wood and metal in a way you don’t see too often.

Hilla Shamia is a Israel-based designer with B.Des. at Holon Institute of Technology, Industrial Design department.
Hilla developed a unique technique that joins the materials of aluminum and wood. She created a series of furnitures based on this technique called – Wood Casting.

These ‘wood castings’ are made from a whole tree trunk, and that enables them to preserve the natural form of the wood while still maintaining distinct boundaries in its creation. Each is a One-of-a-Kind piece.

Cool Stuff – Nautilus table

One of the things I love about great designers and creative minds is how they use sea creatures in the theme of their work – the delicate angles, look, colour, feel etc. I found this table on iCreative website and I wanted to share. It is one of Marc Fish’s art work. How magnificent it is that he could combine all the different types of wood and bend and shape to keep true to the Nautilus shell physical features.

Low table Nautilus II is the second edition of the artistic table shaped nautilus shell drawn by designer Marc Fish. The result is a simple piece of furniture and a very stylish lounge. I would be too afraid to eat on it;  may be I would just sit and look at its beauty.

Marc Fish is a famous English designer who studied in Brighton, London, UK. Originally, the design of the Nautilus table was an experience, then the Nautilus room first was designed and built in 2010-2011. The second edition was created using computer-assisted technology combined with innovative construction techniques. The surface of Nautilus II resembles a shell perfectly and the bottom view of the table reveals an interesting contrast color resulting from the combination of different types of wood. It is manufactured with over 4000 individual parts walnut veneer sycamore in several layers in order to obtain the desired shape. The transparent glass plate has the same lines as the Nautilus. The result is a perfect logarithmic spiral of the nautilus shell.
